Unforgettable all-day Somme tour with Jon.
Although today the world wars may seem far removed, I believe there is value in remembering what came before even if only as a cautionary tale. To that end, as part of a larger survey of Europe, I took my teenage daughter to Arras for the Somme all-day tour. Our guide Jon picked us up at our hotel and drove us to see several cemeteries, memorials, museums, and the physical remains of the trench system and exploded mines. He described various battles and how hills, valleys, woods, weapons, and defenses affected the movements of the soldiers. Jon also explained how the cemeteries were constructed and how they are maintained. Knowledgeable and sensitive, he guided us through the Battle of the Somme and its aftermath. Joining a larger bus tour would probably give one a good overview of the period and place, at far less cost per person, but this small private tour was able to customize the experience and take us to sites inaccessible to large vehicles. Plus we got Jon (his wife Alison sounds like an excellent guide as well, but I cannot speak from personal experience).

Took us to the very spot where Grandad got shot in the right hand during a German offensive and as testimony to his Thorough research,quoted an extract ONSITE from his Ipad of the actual day logs of 44th battalion detailing that Lieutenant W R Maddeford had sustained a hand injury in the afternoon. Best way to see the battlefields
I highly recommend this battlefield tour with Alison. It was great to be shown around by someone who is so passionate about history and has such a deep knowledge of the war and Australia's involvement in it. We got so much more out of the experience than we would have on our own. Alison shared fascinating stories and insights throughout the tour and we really enjoyed the discussions we had with her along the way. Our teenage daughter came with us and enjoyed it too. This tour was so much better than we even imagined! Diane was our guide and she was super accommodating (stopping at the supermarket so we could get some vital supplies for our accommodation), and so incredibly knowledgeable. She tailored the tour so we got to see and hear stories directly related to the NZ experience in WW1 and even recommended the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Arras for a visit, which my hubby and I did the next day and found fascinating. The temperatures were in the vicinity of 38 degrees and Diane considered that throughout the day and had plenty of water in the cooler and even a hat I could borrow! If you are in the area (or even if you didn’t plan to be) add this to your itinerary. My hubby, ex NZ army, was so taken with the whole experience and it was so much more than he expected. War history is not my thing normally, but this tour changed that perspective for me. Thank you so much Diane! Karen and Matthew

Behind its discreet appearance, the museum reveals, once inside, an impressive route set up in a 250-meter underground tunnel. Dug to allow the inhabitants to take refuge there in times of conflict, it then served as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War. The galleries are rich in period objects, weapons, reconstructions, and scenes with mannequins that realistically illustrate the lives of the soldiers. A museum to visit absolutely. The duty of remembrance is essential, especially for the younger generations, so as to never forget the horrors of war, and this place conveys it with great accuracy. The route is remarkably well designed and the visit is particularly striking. You come away deeply touched by the suffering endured by the fighters. The visit ends pleasantly with the park. We spent more than an hour and a half there without seeing the time pass. An experience as enriching as it is moving.

Brigitte is extremely knowledgeable about the area, the landscape, the details about the Great War and the Somme area in particular. She is very helpful and flexible, ensuring that I could visit my great uncles grave at Courcelette. We really enjoyed being with Brigette, she is great company and fun to be with. My 16 year old grand daughter who was with me says "she is amazing!".

Our guide Sylvestre was excellent he had so much knowledge about the history and tragedy that occurred in the area, it was a sombre and humbling experience. We visited Somme Beaumont-Hamel preserved battlefield, The Thiepval memorial to the missing, Pozieres Australian monument, The Lochnagar mine crater, Villers Bretonneux Australian Memorial, The Sir John Monash Visitor Centre which was excellent and highlight of the visit to learn more. We went to local french cafe for lunch which as great. Everything was perfect from communication to ease of booking, modern comfortable van and getting the TGV train from Paris we also had time to do a quick tour of Arras town centre. Highly recommend booking on any of his tours

What a fantastic tour! Dianne was absolutely brilliant, so informative, it was a fascinating afternoon. I went with my wife and mother in law who wanted to find her grandfather’s name on the Thiepval memorial. You get so much more from a tour with a guide who is able to answer all those random questions that come to into your head! Dianne has since helped us to uncover a great deal of information regarding where he fought and even diary accounts from his final days. Thank you for a truly memorable afternoon!
