Established in 1636 by Roger Williams, an advocate of religious and political freedom, rebellious Rhode Island was the first of the original Thirteen Colonies to renounce allegiance to Great Britain in 1776. The harbor town of Newport on Narragansett Bay played key roles in 18th century sea trade and the whaling industry, then became a summer resort for industrial-age millionaires. Newport still attracts visitors, as do the state’s many other colonial historic sites, 400 miles of scenic coastline, charming seaside towns, fresh seafood, and inland outdoor recreation areas.
